CHAPTER 15

Dani walked downstairs to the kitchen, wanting to refresh her memory of how it was set up. When she walked into it she saw a middle-aged man wearing a chef’s apron and assumed he was the chef Signora Bruno had referred to.

“Buenasera, Signor. You must be Matteo, the chef Signora Bruno mentioned. I’m Dani Rosetti,” she said as she held her hand out.

“Welcome to the Bruno Castle,” Matteo said in perfect English. “I am glad you’re here. The Signora has been so worried about what to do with her cooking classes. When you’re finished, she can make a decision about who will teach here, and it will be one less thing for her to worry about.”

“I am here to help in any way I can. I just left her and I had no idea that she was as ill as she is. How long has it been since she’s taught any classes here?” Dani asked.

“About a year. We get a lot of phone calls and mail asking when her classes will resume. When her doctor told her she no longer could teach, she told people that she was taking a year’s hiatus from teaching. I think she really hoped that her cancer would go into remission, and she would be able to resume her teaching schedule. Unfortunately, that was not to be,” Matteo said.

“I didn’t know. Even though she and I keep in frequent touch via email, she never indicated that her situation was so serious. She mentioned she was having some health problems, but I had no idea she was unable to teach.”

“Yes, it has been very hard for her staff to deal with, because we could see how she was failing day by day. She is much loved by all of us, and it has been a very hard thing for us to see. I have been with her for over twenty years. I met her in Paris at the Cordon Bleu, and she asked if I would be interested in working for her. As soon as I graduated, I came here, and I’ve never cooked anywhere else.”

“I know she used to have very large parties with many of the who’s who in the world. Would you cook for those?” Dani asked.

“Yes, as a matter of fact, the Signora and I would often cook together. Those are some of the most wonderful memories of my life, but now, although every day I cook her favorite things, she is so weak that she can barely eat anything. I keep hoping something will appeal to her, but the doctor tells me it is her condition, not my cooking. That is of little solace to me.”

“I can well imagine,” Dani said.

“It is a good thing you have come, Signora. It has given her something to think about, although I know she is worried about the threats the three women who are the finalists have been getting.”

“Yes, she sent me information about them. I guess they are ongoing.”

“Signora, you are not from here, but threats are very common in Florence.
